On Thursday 14 January, the Czech Society for Quality recognised organisations and individuals for whom quality is a vocation. Marcela Munzarová of Nano Medical in Liberec took 2nd place in the national round of the INTERNATIONAL INNOVATION AWARD in the small and medium-sized enterprises category for a medical innovation: nanofibre wound dressings.
Since May last year, Nano Medical has been producing an effective, special nanofibre filter for the AntiMicrobe Web R face masks which, according to a certificate from the renowned Nelson Labs, captures more than 99.9% of viruses, including the feared coronavirus
The healing web of ChitoFib Patch
This manufacturing technology is also fundamental to Nano Medical’s now award-winning product, which will be launched on the market in March next year. The medical plaster for wounds and injuries, registered under the trade name ChitoFib Patch, contains a pad with a nanofibre layer made of chitosan. Nanofibres made from gelling biopolymers bring a new, higher level of care to wound healing and, above all, enhanced and accelerated healing. The structure of the nanofibres also effectively prevents microorganisms from penetrating damaged skin in open wounds.

The Quality Innovation Award was accepted via an online broadcast by Ing. Marcela Munzarová, who is the co-author of dozens of patents and utility models. She has taken part in dozens of projects and solutions, for example: Biocompatible nanofibre constructs creating new drug forms, Bioinspired nanocomposite structures for bone tissue regeneration, Second-generation nanomaterials for biomedicine, and Applied research into a new generation of protective masks with nanofilters.
The creator of the unique and effective AntiMicrobe Web R material, and head and technologist of Nano Medical, Ing. Marcela Munzarová (51), is a graduate of the Technical University of Liberec, which is regarded as the Czech cradle of nanotechnology.
“I was delighted by the success of our innovative applications,” M. Munzarová remarked during the live broadcast. “Within three years, members of the public who will see their lives improved by them will encounter them in their final form. In the near future, the world of nanotechnology and nanoproducts will affect our lives even more intensively – and our products, from Nano Medical, only in the very best sense of the word. The paths pioneers take towards new solutions are always very difficult, and I can confirm from my own experience that approval processes, particularly for medical devices, are often more complicated than developing the new product itself. We will launch the medical plasters with a nanofibre layer on the market in 2021. In the spring season of 2022 they should be available to the public in pharmacies throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia,” the creator promises.
In addition to plasters and dressings, Nano Medical is preparing for the near future applications for use in cosmetics, the food industry and for filtration in industry.
“Life with nanotechnology gives me the chance to create new materials and products, take part in shaping strategies and meet clever, inspiring people. It demands a great deal of energy and intense dedication. But it was my choice,” smiles the Nano Lady, M. Munzarová. That is the nickname given by both domestic and foreign colleagues in the field to the only woman in the Czech nanotechnology industry.
