TENSOR is a truly unique, fast, high-resolution analytical solution that makes STEM and 4D-STEM techniques more accessible, more productive and more cost-effective for users.

Brno, Czech Republic, 8 November 2022 – TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING, a.s. today unveiled the revolutionary TENSOR – a new 4D scanning transmission electron microscope (4D-STEM) that is the world’s first to be built from the ground up for an entirely new level of performance and user experience. TENSOR is designed to meet the needs of everyone whose focus is multimodal nanocharacterisation (morphological, chemical and structural). The instrument brings new research possibilities above all to materials scientists, engineers working in semiconductors and failure analysis (FA), and crystallographers.

“By bringing TENSOR to market, TESCAN becomes the manufacturer you turn to when you need a turnkey analytical 4D STEM solution for medium voltage,” says Jaroslav Klíma, CEO of TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING, a.s. “TESCAN understands the challenges associated with integrating not only STEM, but in particular 4D-STEM functions onto older TEM platforms. We were therefore able to draw on this extensive expertise from the very outset of development. Electron beam scanning is thus synchronised with diffraction imaging using a direct electron detector, electron beam precession, EDS signal acquisition, and near real-time 4D-STEM data analysis and processing,” adds JK Weiss, Head of Development and CEO of TESCAN Tempe. “It is not just the hardware that sets this system apart from every other TEM currently on the market. What makes it unique is, above all, the integration of hardware and software, resulting in an entirely new, revolutionary way of working that does not require months of training PhD students or hours of adjusting the column between different analysis modes.”

For materials scientists and engineers working in semiconductors and failure analysis, TENSOR 4D-STEM provides high-resolution multimodal 2D and 3D characterisation of functional materials at the nanoscale:

  • STEM imaging (Bright Field, Dark Field, HAADF)
  • Elemental mapping using EDS
  • Orientation and phase mapping
  • Strain mapping
  • Virtual STEM using a direct detector
  • STEM, EDS and diffraction tomography

Applications for semiconductor laboratories include the research, development and manufacturing of logic, memory and storage devices, as well as advanced nanocharacterisation.

For crystallographers, TENSOR STEM makes it possible to determine the structure of submicron particles and nanoparticles of both natural and synthetic origin that are too small to be characterised using micro-XRD techniques.

“TESCAN TENSOR is another of our world-first innovations of its kind. Just as was the case with the introduction of FIB-SEM and plasma FIB-SEM, ToF-SIMS applications on FIB-SEM platforms, Dynamic-CT and Spectral-CT,” says Vratislav Košťál, Product Director at TESCAN, “we listened to our customers and delivered what they asked for – a more accessible TEM solution that is highly powerful and productive even for everyday use.”
