Dry nanofibre [n]Parfumes offer an alternative to conventional alcohol-based perfumes and prepare the cosmetics sector for future restrictions on volatile substances.
Prague, 2 December 2025 – In recent months, the European institutions have been intensively addressing the future of ethanol as a chemical substance. As part of the assessment of its possible classification among substances with CMR properties (carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction), scenarios are being discussed that could, in the coming years, fundamentally affect the use of alcohol in a range of products – from disinfectants to cosmetics. Perfume manufacturers are therefore beginning to look for new ways to create fragrances without relying on alcohol.
The Czech nanotechnology company nanoSPACE is responding to this trend with the launch of a new range of dry, water-free [n]Parfumes perfumes, which contain no liquid whatsoever – neither alcohol nor water. The fragrance is held in a thin nanofibre membrane and is activated only on contact with water on the skin. This technology, developed in the Czech Republic, brings an entirely new format to the world of perfumes – a concentrated essence in the form of a light, dry “sheet” that turns into a transparent gel within a few seconds.
“It is clear that the approach to hazardous substances is tightening across the EU, and ethanol is coming under ever closer scrutiny in this respect. Cosmetics companies are already factoring in that the use of alcohol may be regulated more strictly in the future than it is today. We developed our dry nanofibre [n]Parfumes perfumes so that they would not be dependent on these trends – they are free of alcohol, free of liquids, and ready for a world in which the regulation of volatile substances will be considerably stricter,” says Jiří Kůs, founder and CEO of nanoSPACE.
How dry nanofibre perfumes work
In conventional perfumes, alcohol often makes up the bulk of the volume – serving as the carrier of the fragrance and, at the same time, as a highly volatile component that evaporates immediately. With [n]Parfumes, the principle is the opposite:
- the fragrance composition is bound to a nanofibre membrane,
- the perfume is applied in the form of a dry sheet,
- on contact with water (for example, on damp skin) it transforms within a few seconds into a transparent gel that is easy to spread.
The result is a fully fledged perfume with no alcohol and no liquid in the packaging. This format is practical for travel (it is not subject to the restrictions on liquids on aircraft), weighs next to nothing, and there is no risk of a glass bottle breaking in a handbag or suitcase.
A response to regulation and sensitive skin
The tightening of rules on CMR substances in cosmetics puts brands under pressure to reformulate their products and to look for safer alternatives. In addition to their “regulatory resilience”, dry alcohol-free perfumes also bring a benefit for users for whom the alcohol in a perfume causes a burning sensation, a feeling of dryness or skin irritation.
“Our [n]Parfumes answer two questions at once: how to make a perfume that is comfortable for sensitive skin while also being ready for future regulation. Thanks to the nanofibre carrier, we need neither alcohol nor water – we focus solely on the fragrance itself,” adds Lucie Konečná, creative director of nanoSPACE.
Czech technology, ready for the world
[n]Parfumes were created in collaboration between Czech nanofibre experts and perfumers. The nanofibre membrane technology has long been used across the nanoSPACE portfolio (for example, in bedding for people with allergies); now it is being applied to the world of perfumes for the first time.
The new range of water-free [n]Parfumes perfumes is available in several women’s, men’s and unisex variants in the nanoSPACE.cz online shop, in the Water-free alcohol-free perfumes section.
